WVAFP at Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School Career Day

WVAFP member Iris Trinidad-Carillo, MD, FAAFP, recently participated in the Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School’s Career Day, helping introduce students to the world of Family Medicine.

Students in grades 6 - 8 had the opportunity to rotate through different career stations, ask questions, and explore potential future professions. Dr. Trinidad-Carillo was the only physician present, giving students a unique opportunity to learn directly from a medical doctor about what it takes to pursue a career in medicine.

One of the most common questions students asked was, “How long does it take to become a doctor?” To make the experience interactive and fun, Dr. Trinidad-Carillo brought hands-on learning activities, including the Operation game and a Medical Jeopardy trivia challenge, which sparked curiosity and excitement among the students. Many also had the chance to try out real medical tools such as a reflex hammer, otoscope, ophthalmoscope, and penlight, applying concepts they had recently learned in their Life Science classes.

WVAFP appreciates Dr. Trinidad-Carillo for inspiring the next generation of future physicians and for sharing the excitement of medicine with students in her community.
