AAFP Office Champion Quality Improvement Program

The AAFP is recruiting 50 family medicine practices for a quality improvement project that will train staff to integrate tobacco cessation activities into daily office routines. All applications will be considered; however, the project is targeting states which have a smoking prevalence rate of greater than 20 percent.

Each participating practice will designate an Office Champion to lead the project, as well as a physician who will ensure that the Office Champion receives the support he or she needs. The program will educate Office Champions through an online training module, live teleconferences, and a practice manual. There is no travel involved and all but 1 of the teleconferences can be done anytime. The Office Champions will be required to submit an implementation plan to the AAFP and track and report results.

Practices that complete the program will receive $2,000 to cover administrative costs, plus materials for patients and recognition for practices. Participating sites will also be recognized in an advertisement in American Family Physician and on the AAFP website.

The deadline to apply is May 8, 2012. Participating sites will be announced in late May, and project implementation and evaluation will take place from June through November, 2012.

WVAFP Partners with Atlantic Health Partners for Vaccine Savings and Advocacy

The very mention of immunizations can start debate among anyone who works in family medicine.

The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) and WVAFP have been working in recent years to identify how to assist our members to deal with the ever-increasing costs of providing vaccines, along with addressing proper storage, ordering and payment problems.

WVAFP is pleased to announce that it has found a strong, new partner in this cause. This new partner, Atlantic Health Partners (AHP), can help our member practices save precious dollars and advocate on your behalf with payers and manufacturers.

AHP, a physician purchasing program, works directly with sanofi pasteur and Merck to obtain very favorable pricing and purchasing terms for a wide variety of pediatric, adolescent, adult and travel vaccines. Members of the Atlantic program make purchases directly from sanofi pasteur and Merck (as many of you do now) but typically receive better pricing and purchasing terms. In addition, participation is voluntary and there is no cost to enroll in the AHP program.

There are other vaccine purchasing programs, but AHP has made a special effort to engage family physicians. The benefits of deeper discounts and advocacy for WVAFP members plus AHP’s support of our programs were immediately attractive to WVAFP. AHP will direct a portion of its revenues to WVAFP and provide an additional unrestricted educational grant based on participation. Needless to say, a long-term partnership was the obvious next step.

For more information and details about how your practice can benefit from participation in AHP’s program, contact. Mr. Jeff Winokur or call 800.741.2044.
